It has been a great start to 2020 for the Oden Institute. We congratulate Oden Institute Affiliated Faculty member Dr Takashi Tanaka, Assistant Professor of Aerospace Engineering & Engineering Mechanics, for receiving an an NSF Career Award and an Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR) Young Investigator Award.

As we are in the midst of recruiting season for our next batch of CSEM graduate students, it is inspiring to see our current students leading the way as ambassadors for the Institute through outreach programs. On February 22nd, students from Dr Patrick Heimbach's research group will explore simulations of Arctic ice melt and other models with the next generation of female computational scientists and engineers as part of UT's Girl Day initiative. Student Profile: Jennifer Zvonek, Moncrief Fellowship Intern 2019

Mechanical Engineering graduate Jennifer Zvonek spent her summer here at Oden Institute as our most recent Moncrief Fellowship intern. The 22-year-old isn’t afraid of trying new things. During her time as an undergrad at UT Austin, the native Austinite switched majors more than once after being inspired by the wonders of physics, then mathematics, computer programming, as well as robotics and machine learning. Space Traffic Management Conference 2020

February 19-20, 2020, Mulva Auditorium, EERC Building, Cockrell School of Engineering, UT Austin.

Mark your calendars as the Oden Institute, Strauss Center and Cockrell School of Engineering partner with the International Academy of Astronautics (IAA) and the United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR), to host the annual Space Traffic Management Conference 2020 here at UT. Join Oden Institute’s Dr Moriba Jah for two days of talks, workshops and panel discussions focused on the most important issues in space traffic management. Admission is free for students with a valid ID but registration online is required.

Michael Sacks Paper Among Journal's Top Cited

A paper coauthored by Dr Michael Sacks for the ‘International Journal for Numerical Methods in Biomedical Engineering’ is among the most cited studies in the journal's history. "A noninvasive method for the determination of in vivo mitral valve leaﬂet strains," was published online in August 2018. The study also made the cover (above) for both the online edition and the print version, which was published in December 2018.

Oden Director Talks 'Digital Twin' Tech with BBC's Digital Planet

Director of the Oden Institute for Computational Engineering and Sciences, Karen Willcox, was recently interviewed on Digital Planet, a tech-themed radio show broadcast to millions by the BBC's World Service. Willcox explained the idea behind 'digital twin' technology - in this case a computer simulation of a drone that is pushed to its limits so its real-life counterpart doesn't have to be.
