Unlocking Potential: Insights from the Moncrief Interns of 2023

Moncrief Summer Internship

The Moncrief Undergraduate Summer Internship Program provides summer support for qualified undergraduate students of mathematics, science, and engineering to work within the Oden Institute for Computational Engineering and Sciences during the summer months.

Interns work with faculty and research staff from one of the Oden Institute's research centers and groups on one of a wide range of research topics. Research activities generally focus on developing modeling and simulation methods to study problems in areas such as energy, environment, advanced materials, biomedical research, nanomanufacturing, autonomous systems and many other scientific and engineering areas that draw on applied and computational mathematics, computing, fluid mechanics, solid mechanics, mathematical physics, and biology.

Eligibility Requirements

For participation in the Summer 2024 program applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents* who are currently enrolled in an undergraduate institution and will be entering their junior or senior year in Fall 2024.

*International students may apply if they are currently enrolled at the University of Texas at Austin.

Internship Information

  • Dates: June 3 – August 9, 2024
  • Support: the internship will provide a $6,000 stipend paid directly to the student, plus housing in a UT Austin dorm, a meal plan, and some funding to defray travel costs to/from Austin. UT Austin students with existing housing may elect for a housing stipend in lieu of on campus housing and dining
  • Project assignment: Interns will be assigned a faculty supervisor in one of the Oden Institute's Research Centers or Groups and will work with faculty, graduate students, and postdocs.

Application Deadline: February 1, 2024

Applicants will be notified of decisions by March 8, 2024.

How to Apply

  1. Submit Internship Online Application Form

Submit the following materials to the Internship Coordinator via the Application Materials Uploader located below:

  2. Resume
  3. Personal Statement — write a 1-page (double-spaced) statement describing why you wish to participate in the Moncrief Summer Internship Program. You may include your past & current research experience and state your post-graduation career goals.
  4. A copy of your official transcript(s). PLEASE NOTE — this is a COPY of your official transcript (i.e. get your official transcript, scan it, and then upload it). For participation in the Summer 2024 program, students must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate institution and be entering their junior or senior year in Fall 2024.

  • I am an international student. Can I apply for this internship?

If you are currently attending the University of Texas at Austin and hold a valid F-1 visa, you may apply.

  • Is research experience required?

No, research experience is not required.

  • What coursework/experience will help me succeed in the internship?

While not required, it has been noted by faculty and previous interns that the following coursework and/or experiences would be helpful for interns' success:

    Basic numerical methods

    Calculus

    Differential equations

    Finite elements courses

    Functional analysis

    LaTex

    Linear algebra

    Matlab

Programming (languages such as C, Fortran)

    Scientific computing

    Statistics

  • What are the dates of the internship?

The internship dates for the 2024 program are TBD.

  • May I enroll in classes during the internship?

We prefer that interns do not take classes over the summer, however it may be allowed contingent upon approval from the supervising professor. Tuition assistance cannot be provided.

  • Is housing provided?

Yes, housing in a UT Austin dormitory is provided by the internship program.

  • Will interns have access to the library and other campus services?

Summer interns will be provided with a University ID Card, library privileges, permission to purchase a temporary membership to RecSports and permission to apply for and purchase a Parking Permit.

  • Do students work in groups or alone with faculty?

Typically interns will be assigned to work within one of the Oden Institute's Research Centers or Groups. This will involve working with faculty, graduate students, and postdocs. Each intern may be assigned to a different Research Center/Group.

  • What is the deadline to apply?

The application deadline for the Summer 2024 program is February 1, 2024. All materials must be received in our office no later than this date to receive consideration.

  • What information should be included in the ‘Relevant Background’ section of the application?

Relevant background should include: coursework, previous summer internship positions, course projects in computational science and engineering (CSE) related courses, and previous jobs that include CSE research components. If there is a specific research center/group or faculty member you are interested in working with, you may indicate it here. You may submit this information in a separate document if you prefer.

  • Are transcripts required?

Yes, a copy of your official transcript is required. Please note — this is a COPY of your OFFICIAL transcript. Obtain your official transcript from your university. Scan it.
