CSEM alumnus Tobin Isaac has won ICES' first Outstanding Dissertation Award based on the impact of his subject, the originality/creativity of his work, the quality of his scholarship and writing, and its potential for publishing.
His dissertation is entitled "Scalable, Adaptive Methods for Forward and Inverse Problems in Continental-Scale Ice Sheet Modeling" (which he successfully defended in June 2015). The awards committee, comprised of CSEM faculty, cited Isaac's dissertation for "contributions to parallel scalable algorithms for adaptive mesh refinement, implicit solution of highly nonlinear and heterogeneous PDEs, and large-scale uncertainty quantification, all integrated to address forward and inverse problems in continental-scale ice sheet dynamics."
Isaac’s dissertation addressed quantifying uncertainty for Antarctic ice flow on the continental scale, which has been computationally prohibitive due to the size and complexity of the problem.
Isaac is currently a postdoctoral scholar at the University of Chicago and a visiting scientist at ICES.
