ICES and the ACES Building
ICES has access to an assortment of computing and networking resources
located in the ACES building which generally include but are not
limited to the following:
- Over 250 general purpose workstations, including
Linux based PCs, Macs, and Windows PCs. We are in the
process of transitioning to 64-bit architecture, and have
approximately 65 percent of our workstations upgraded
at this stage.
- Five Class C Ethernet subnets capable of supporting Gigabit
speeds based on Cisco switches with Category six copper and
multi-mode fiber cabling.
- Several Linux and MacOS departmental servers, including:
- Cluster of Network File Servers with 20 TB of redundant,
multipathed fibre channel storage served by 3 Sunfire
x2200s with 16 GB of RAM, 2 x dual core AMD opteron
processors and 2 x 4 gigabit per second fibre channel
controllers.
- A dual-processor Apple Xserve file server with 1.5 TB of storage.
- A Cluster of Xen virtual machine servers running
Redhat Cluster Suite which are dual processor / dual core
AMD Opteron 275s with 8GB of RAM and 20 TB of network
attached storage (NAS). The cluster acts as an application
and license server as well as providing ftp, print, DNS,
log, email, directory (LDAP), collaboration and web services.
Each of these servers has redundant network access to both the
clients it serves as well as to the NAS. This setup provides
high availability (fail-over) for each of the services
listed above.
- A backup / archival system which provides not only back
ups of the NFS / Samba file servers but also for many of
the end-user laptops.
- A Concurrent Versions System (CVS) and Subversion (SVN)
server with 1 TB of storage for version control for
locally developed software and document management.
- Several distributed memory clusters including:
- BeVo — 184 Core Xeon cluster with 10 TB of SAN storage and infiniband interconnect
- Cerebro — Apple G5 cluster with eight dual–processor nodes.
- Deanston — HP XC AMD Opteron cluster with 16 dual–processor nodes.
- Reynolds — 256 core Xeon Woodcrest cluster with 8TB of SAN storage and infiniband interconnect
- Holmes2 — 48 processor Xeon cluster with 1TB of Network Attached storage
- Muskoka — 80 processor AMD operton cluster with 1TB of Network Attached storage
- Prism2 — 64 core AMD Opteron cluster with 3TB of SAN storage, infiniband interconnect and 8
