ICES Undergraduate Certificate in Computational Science & Engineering

See Course Requirements

Overview

The Computational Science and Engineering (CSE) Certificate Program offers highly qualified junior and senior level undergraduate students an opportunity for in-depth study and research in computational science and engineering, including computational and applied mathematics, numerical simulation, scientific computation, and visualization. The highlight of the program is the introduction of senior-level students to independent research on problems in computational science and engineering that have applications cutting across broad areas of the university. The certificate program is administered by the Institute for Computational Engineering and Sciences (ICES), which offers graduate degrees in Computational Science, Engineering, and Mathematics. Upon completion of the course requirements, students receive certificate recognition on the University transcript and a letter from the Director of ICES that describes the program and work completed. These, plus supporting letters from supervising faculty and graduate mentors, are valuable assets for students applying to graduate school and pursuing competitive job opportunities.

Prerequisites

This certificate program is only available to currently enrolled undergraduate students at The University of Texas at Austin.

To apply for admission, students must have completed at least sixty semester hours of coursework and must have a University grade point average of at least 3.00; they are expected to have broad training in quantitative methods comparable to:

Course Requirements

Students must complete eighteen credit hours in the following coursework and receive a letter grade of at least B in each certificate course:

  1. 1 course (3 credits) in Numerical Computing.
  2. 1 course (3 credits) in Numerical Applications.
  3. 3 courses (9 credits) from the General Electives list.
  4. A Scientific Computing Project course (3 credits) supervised by a member of the Computational Science, Engineering, and Mathematics (CSEM) graduate program faculty. The research project should be completed during the senior year, taken as a Research Methods/Individual Instruction class. The research project course may include mentoring by ICES post-doctoral fellows and CSEM graduate students as part of a vertical instructional research team.

Course substitutions within the broad area of computational science and engineering may be made with approval from the certificate program's faculty advisor.
