Caffarelli Receives Notre Dame Honorary Degree

Luis Caffarelli, ICES professor and professor of mathematics, received an honorary doctorate of science from the University of Notre Dame during their spring commencement ceremonies. The honor recognized his leadership in the field of partial differential equations and their applications. In conveying the degree, Notre Dame President Rev. John I Jenkins noted that Caffarelli’s mathematical work is important for problems in physics, chemistry, biology and the social sciences. Jenkins also acknowledged that Caffarelli’s problem-solving has contributed greatly to science in the areas of homogenization, nonlinear elliptic equations and free boundary problems.
