The History of the Finite Element Method from -\infty to 1970
Friday, November 18, 10:30PM – 12PM
ACE 6.304
Ivo Babuska
The Finite Element method is the most used numerical method in the engineering and computational sciences. For example, there are more than 40 commercial FEM packages, and many more are public and used in research. What is the origin and history of the ideas behind FEM, and the engineering and mathematical foundations of the finite element method? This presentation will cover the period until 1970; this year is essentially the beginning of the explosive development of the method.
